Silco was shaped by both the classism and repression by the topside city, Piltover, and the seemingly lawless, exploitative, and unrestrictive environment of the undercity. His vision of a free undercity (called the Nation of Zaun) was a idea that he found support in with his once friend, Vander, and one both of them took stride to bring into fruition during their young adult years. As his vision of Zaun was not tempered by rules or limitations, Silco carried a harsh unyielding manner to force Zaun’s freedom no matter sacrifice. The reality of Zaun was his determined focus, and his cold-hearted mannerism to achieving that end eventually strained his relationship with Vander to the point where Vander tried to murder Silco in the toxic waters of the undercity.
The betrayal of Vander left significant scars on Silco. Not only did the physical assault leave the left side of his face mutilated, but Silco never forgave Vander for trying to orchestrate his demise. He was a man that had been betrayed by those he considered brother, and he would never forgive.
His belief in loyalty was reinforced after the betrayal. He continually believed that Zaunites needed to stand together, so much so, that he even tried to convince Vander to join the cause again. He rewarded loyalty and developed a cunning harshness for betrayal. As with his vision of Zaun, he was a man who wasn’t afraid of using punishment or even killing to keep people ready to betray him in line. Yet, Silco understood that being a complete dictator would not get him everything he needed; he kept people loyal with his vision, his drive to achieve it, and the resources to reward success and punish failure. He was able to instill loyalty all the same; we see throughout the series the same side characters continually sticking with Silco over the years as his enterprise grew and grew. He had the strength of character and the cunning to get the best out of people who stuck with him and stamped out rebellion.
When building the infrastructure of revolution, he had benefit of patience. Silco waited years for the opportunity to free the undercity, building his industrialist empire, using his vision to bring people to his cause, and to seize on opportunities that came his way. He waited until Vander was in trouble to make his move to seize the undercity; he parlayed with an enforcer to create a similar relationship as Vander had with Greyson; he built his image as an industrialist rather than a vicious drug lord to keep Piltover from interfering with his business; he provided Singed resources to develop Shimmer, the substance that would sustain Silco’s war financially while also weaponizing Shimmer upon the very population he was going to force into freedom simutaneously chaining them with addiction. Sacrifice was necessary to Silco no matter how cruel it was.
For someone with no formal education, he proved himself to be highly intelligent, cunning and a master strategist. While the undercity was frought with constantly changing industry, he was able to ride the wave of profit from Chemtech and the ingenuity of Zaunites. He expanded the black market of Shimmer well beyond the borders of Zaun, and he facilitated markets of goods coming to the undercity once he was in power. While he dealt with the potential of Chem-baron backstabbing and outside agents trying to overthrow him, he remained calmly focused on his life long ambition. He embodies “lose the battle but win the war” mentality.
While he has many relationships in his efforts, he considers his relationship with Jinx to be the most important. He adopted her when she was a child, and he’s committed himself to her as a father with the utmost loyalty and affection. No other person has compromised Silco emotionally as Jinx. He takes Jinx as she is and loves her no matter what anyone might think of her mental instability or ‘bad luck’, and he cares for her so much, he would even give up the dream of Zaun to keep her safe. Even when she accidentally mortally wounds him, he only shows love and acceptance of her.
He is also not easily flustered and upset. He keeps his temper in check and always seems to appear to be in control, even having the appearance of being two steps ahead of everyone else. However, the one person (other than Vander) who continually earns his ire is Vander’s adoptive daughter, Vi. He considers her such a threat to his relationship with Jinx, he personally went out to hunt for her in order to bring about Vi’s death. When he failed, it became the one time we see him lose complete control of his temper and violently lash out in a fit of rage.
Abilities: Silco is a normal human being with normal human abilities. Despite his strangle hold on the production of the drug called Shimmer which enhances all physical abilities, his usage of the drug is limited to an injection to his left eye which only appears to stabilize and slow the toxic effects from the water that permeated and mutilated a wound there decades before.
Inventory: Clothing including coat, Vander's old knife, two vials of Shimmer, ophthalmic metal injector, a flask partially filled with whiskey, eight cigars in a metal case with cigar cutter and lighter, a small bag of coin currency, Piltover peace agreement document.
