[From Richard's own words during one of the occasions they laid bare some of their personal secrets, he knew that there were abandonment issues. A mother attempting to abandon their child wasn't a rare thing where he was from, but he was aware of the long-term scars. He knew that patience and a constant reinforcement that he was not the same as those old memories was required here.
