[His arms curled more around Richard as the younger man stepped in against him, pulling Richard a little away from the tree. The humidity was starting to have his clothing cling to his skin, but he had lived near water for a long time, yet he didn't find the stickiness to be all that pleasant. Yet, he didn't deny that it was all worthwhile to feel Richard's body against his own even for a moment.] A pleasant thought; I would question your motivations if you didn't.
[He had thought that curiosity that they had started with would leave after falling into bed together. Yet, he found himself guessing about so much of Richard, and he enjoyed being engaged in such a way. Perhaps they would show a little more of their monstrous natures and he wondered if they would enjoy it or despise it.
He allowed Richard's fingers along his neck and at his jaw, aware the younger man could hurt him if it was desired.] The fact is that I very rarely care. Caring can be lethal, and I've experienced that personally. Loyalty doesn't require care, especially if our goals are the same. Give and take loyalty equally.
[He kept his business dealings his primarily objective, seeking to control this place and potentially the Chosen through the economy. It was a long game.
His fingers dipped down to the top of Richard's trousers, stroking beneath the waistband without hinting that he was looking to get those clothes off. He was simply exploring and enjoying their closeness.]
Why would I apologize for being who I am? My actions are for purpose.
Ah. So you're not worried of the knife digging on your back. [He teases the other man, flashing him a knowing grin. While such scenario is always possibility between them, it's very unlikely to happen at the moment. Though the constant, underlying sense of danger did add more thrill to their dynamic. This small, subtle game of power that kept them on their toes was such stark contrast to the those moments of the vulnerability from before.
His finger tips slid along Silco's jawline, feeling the hotness of the skin. He stops at his chin, grabbing it lightly between his fingers and pulls. Richard then cranes his own neck up, bringing his lips to ghost over Silco's. Teasing a kiss.]
It's all about keeping appearances. [An act of deceit. While Richard believed in the power of fear, he did find love and trust to be more lasting motivators for support. Then, not wanting to get too drunk on the heat of moment Richard pulls away, stepping out of their small embrace.]
[The corner of his lip twitched in a tiny smirk at the comment.] Perhaps a knife digging into me is a kink of mine. [He said it with an air of mystery with an undercurrent of teasing. He didn't deny that he and Richard were as dangerous as they seemed currently compatible, and aside from the occasional difference in opinion, they seemed to be heading in the same direction.
His blue eye half closed at the tease of lips, and his arms tightened momentarily. He could see how many who earned this side of Richard would be confused and tempted at the same time. And why not? That body was such a delicate mix of both, and it was alluring. Now that he knew what was held under those clothes, he found the younger man rather physically attractive.
He released his grip when Richard eased away from him, and he plucked at the collar of his shirt as the heat caused the beginnings of a light sheen of sweat.]
Ah but you see it doesn't matter here. There were two and now three people from my world who are very outspoken about how monstrous I am, and who will interfere with my dealings or take things from me if they knew of them. Keeping up appearances for me is simply creating a distortion of their loud cries. Killing them isn't an option for me, so I give jobs to anyone and everyone to twist that image sold to the public so freely. I'm fine being seen as a monster. I do what I must, and no I'm not apologetic about it. I won't ask permission to assure my own future.
[One hand dropped to settle on the small of Richard's back again as they walked. It was, perhaps, one of the few times that he admitted to anyone the slanderous rhetoric used against him by those of his world. He had been physically assaulted by those same people too, but he used the paltry system against them when and where he could. He did not, as a rule, defend his own image. He wasn't anyone's favourite person.]
[With his eyes narrowing and lips curling a hint of a smugness, the look Richard gives Silco as the words slip past his tongue is almost sultry. Threat or a promise? Maybe both or neither. The sense of danger brings it's very own kind to sex, raising the intimacy high along with the rush of adrenaline. It is no wonder that Edward used to say that there's nothing quite like a woman in the sheets after escaping death in the heat of battle. But for Richard it had never really been about riding on the waves of leftover adrenaline, but to seek out new thrills of power.
The hand resting against the small of his back pleased Richard and he did make sure to walk in a steady pace, right next to Silco. It was a small and subtle gesture of affection, something that could probably be argued to be brotherly even if it wasn't for the rest of the tension. But Richard could sense a hint of possessiveness behind it, which send small tingling shivers down his spine.
It reminded him of the ways his Kingmaker would walk with him along the empty hallways of the royal palace. A secure and owning hand on his hip, long fingers casually reaching down to brush on his legs as the man would whisper honeyed atrocities to his ear, all while praising him on the same breath.
It wasn't quite the same but still nice. Something almost familiar.]
You gather lot of enemies. [Which, of course, was to be expected. Especially for men like them. Richard, however, wasn't entirely certain if he agreed on Silco's tactic. Keeping up appearances and playing around such accusations were essential, unless one wanted to invite troubles to their way.
.. Which is entirely why he feels like he needs like he should bring up the oddity on the network.]
Is that the reason for masked manifest on the network not too long time ago]
[He decided to clarify that, in case Richard had decided that any bladed weapon would due for this apparent foyer into a dangerous sexual addition. After all, he wanted to keep things personal, and a sword was just so unwieldy in very close quarters. Perhaps it was just a tease, but he wasn't prepared to drop that act at the moment when it seemed that the younger man might also be engaged in such activities in his sex life beyond here. It wasn't as if they had talked about previous partners or anything.
The greenhouse heat and humidity was beginning to feel oppressive, and so he directed them to an area where fresh air was allowed to enter in a controlled fashion. It was a touch cooler there, and it was also close to an exit in case they wanted to step out of the privacy of this place. For now, he was perfectly willing to stay.]
Under normal circumstances, my enemies wouldn't survive. However, here is a little tricky, which is why it is important to create dissonance with the yelling about me. After all, I could care less what most think of me. [It was safer that way; he wasn't looking for love and adoration from everyone. He was confident in what he could do, how he could do it, and that no one was in an actual position to stop him either. He was being careful, of course, but for those he had loyalty, he responded similarly for now.
He immediately knew what Richard was talking about regarding the network, and he shrugged his shoulders.]
An unsanctioned and unfortunate post from someone trying out tactics beyond their comfort zone. It is a shame it is such a public lesson to be learned, but we all make mistakes when we're young. I saw your rebuttal; I assume you had no idea that was my daughter.
Knife is assassin's weapon. Sword king's. Is that what you would prefer?
[Richard counters, teasing right back. Although, he did understand the implication behind Silco's words. Despite his rather limited sexual encounters it wasn't like he was completely unfamiliar with such foreplay. There had been times when the blood had been drawn out during his times with Buckingham -- both from their own actions and from others'.
He allows Silco to guide them around the narrow paths of greenhouse, silently following his lead while observing some of the plants and vegetation from the corner of his eye. Majority of it all remains unknown to him, looking like something described in children's tale. A witch's forest. Yet strangely enough, he could not feel Joan's presence the same way he usually could. It's strangely calming, somehow. He was content with staying in Silco's presence.
He looks quickly up at Silco with questioning eyes before bringing them back to focus on the pavement ahead of them. Richard had assumed that the masked person was linked to Silco in one way or another. After all, the man had mentioned the name Zaun to him before, even if it was just an off-hand comment. And he didn't miss the way he had been absent on the post. But his daughter? Nay, he didn't see that coming. Well, Richard had made his feelings on the matter clear there, so no need to revisit his words.]
She is going to need guidance. [He says, keeping his tone neutral.] She might have fumbled, here, and her following actions will have more weight now.
Knives are intimate, swords are distance. If you desperately want to bring a sword to bed, I don't think I would stop you.
[Despite his tone remaining normal, he was teasing in his own subtle way. They had to learn a give and take with one another, and he was willing to compromise if Richard thought a sword was a more relevant kink. They were only just endeavoring to learn one another's likes and dislikes for as long as this lasted for; whatever they had survived the infection at least which was interesting.
In this particular greenhouse, it was fruit bearing plants and some vegetables where the needs were compatible. He was only just learned more about fruit-bearing trees and growing them, so they were small and budding with small fruits this year. Berries were common of course, easy to grow in hedges or on ground cover. There was a large strawberry patch they had yet to come upon.
Silco had been at the political game of Zaun for a very long time, and he was not willing to associate openly with that post. For one, he wouldn't detract from Jinx's attempt to rally for her cause. For two, he didn't agree with her tactic choice, but he remained supportive of her taking the initiative. He would pull strings behind the scenes and use that as a teachable moment. He didn't doubt that Richard's words had stung, and he didn't for one second hold it against the younger man. Lessons came with harshness sometimes.]
She will have it, yes. This is her first attempt at rallying an entire city; there is still much to learn for her. [Leadership didn't come naturally to Jinx; her demons made it difficult to focus for a long time, and she was too erractic to hold a strong political position for long.] I agree with you. She has made a loud presence which likely won't suit her goals long term. Everyone makes mistakes, but I won't let anything happen to her either. She needs the room to grow.
[He and Richard were likely close to the same page on the matter. However, he did not voice any doubt on Jinx's abilities to learn. They hadn't reached that level of trust where he thought it would be wise.]
I know you wouldn't. [He says, words full of smug confidence. And sure enough! There really isn't much that Silco could prevent him doing if he so wished. The past week should've been enough proof of his skills and strength of determination. Although, despite Silco playing it safe, he wasn't foolish enough to buy into the illusion that the man couldn't bring the heat to match his own. He had seen some of that passion and will of his strength during their intimate moments.
The confirmation earns a small smile from Richard.]
Of course, she will. It is our duties as fathers to direct our children towards the right path when they waver. [Unfortunately, he might not have the best opinion of Jinx -- and well, the clumsy and hubris fueled attempt to grab power didn't do her any favors, but that didn't mean he couldn't have respect for the bond that she and her father shared. He wasn't sure whether he believed in Silco and his cause yet, but it is the moment of like these that makes him like the man and see whether he has what it takes to bring his dream to realization.]
The road won't be kind to her, but I am sure you already know that. She might not aspire admiration or trust yet, but as long she plans her next moves carefully the game isn't completely lost. It would do good for her to lose the mask. People are more likely to stand behind a face they can recognize and look up to. Masks are for tales and fantasies.
Well, even physical relationships need a healthy give and take to them. [Sometimes he felt the need to point out to Richard that there were standards in a relationship that wasn't simply him shoving the younger man down and having his way. He kept his dominance hidden behind experience, but when he decided to be determined, there was quite the thrill. Especially if Richard was also determined.]
Indeed. She has my full support even if I don't agree with her methods. She can't learn and course correct if she doesn't experience feedback. [This was a path that he had hoped that she would take, but he also did not expect her to go the distance with it. Some would follow, but other would refuse not matter what she said.] Do you guide your own son similarly?
[He stopped their walking progress so he could turn Richard towards him.] She has created chaos before this call for action. Though, I am curious what tactic you would take to bring the Chosen together? They are not simply commoners.
[The statement makes Richard raise a confused brow and glance up at the other man.] Naturally. [Some of the previous smugness fades from Richard's face. His voice does stay strong and unwavering despite the spark of uncertainty in his mind. 'What a strange and obvious thing to bring up,' he thinks to himself - silently wondering whether Silco was dissatisfied with their 'arrangement'.]
In time, yes. My son is still mere a small child, too young to understand just how deep the complex nature of politics can go. He still is at the age where child prefers the company of a mother over father. [Not to mention that Anne's boy was no doubt far too kind and meek for the ruthless nature of Richard's world. He did not spend much time with the child, out of fear of the inevitable rejection, but even he could tell that. The boy would eventually receive proper education as a crown prince, that he was certain of, but whether those teachings came from Richard or from a scholar? That was left to be seen.
Richard let's himself to be maneuvered and turned around to face the older man as mulls over the question.
It is a tricky situation. That much is clear. There is no crown, no leader blessed by the divine. The people were versatile with their own strange beliefs, powers and way of workings. It all adds to a difficult equation, but not impossible one. Richard catches himself from wondering just what would his Kingmaker do in situation like this? Just what kind of devilish ploy would his other half come up with.]
I would not set myself above of them at the moment and call myself a leader yet. Instead I would call for comradery, show them that we are all equal. It is foolish to paint oneself as an icon of cause when it is still merely learning to fly. Only when the bond has been established and I have their souls bound to me by loyalty would plant the idea of leadership into their minds. It is important that they are the ones to raise you up as their king, rather than do it yourself. Otherwise you risk dissatisfaction and potential rebellion within the ranks.
[Ah, they were still working on the idea of relationship consent. It was apparently a foreign concept for Richard, and that left him wondering what sort of backwards place the younger man had endured.] Don't do that. Tell me what is on your mind when I speak such things.
[He had been working when he was a child, though nothing particularly difficult. If there was a job to be done, idle hands would be put to use.] Do you keep him to observe your dealings with politics, or those activities stay with his mother? She has her own responsibilities to attend to separate from yours, yes? [They were both learning a lot about where they had come from, and his free, violent, and liberal Zaun was a stark contrast to Richard's seemingly rigid conservative society. A part of him did enjoy defining those restraints.
He stroked his fingers along Richard's jawline, enjoying the smooth skin that held no hint of stubble.
As his fingers touched, he considered Richard's plan, and it was similar to what he would do. Of course, his own reputation would never allow those tactics long terms, but it was sound if allowed room to breathe and develop. Richard likely would be a threat at some point, assuming the younger man wasn't yet another looking to simply return home as quickly as possible.]
Work small in a grassroots manner and build up as you secure loyalty. You still have to prove yourself as a capable leader before you position yourself to be risen up, otherwise you risk your head being taken before you complete your rise. And what would you do to those that won't believe in you or who may rebel regardless of your efforts?
['Don't do what?', the question is on tip of his tongue but he swallows it down before words have a chance to form, deciding against them. Because, despite his confusion, he could tell what Silco meant by that. Buckingham had once or twice scolded him on similar issue. The way how Richard would continue to hold his tongue rather than voice out this thoughts, shutting himself inside his mind. However, the truth simply was that most of time he did not have an answer. Not with his thoughts so often leaving claw marks on the walls inside of his mind as he tried to make sense of the world and himself. Leaving him resorting in staying quiet, just like now with Silco.]
She's my wife. Her duties include overseeing the education of our son and making sure that things run smoothly with our servants and that's it. Ever since my brother's passing I have been needed at the capitol and help support our new king as he prepares to ascend to the throne. I have a retainer to take care of my lands during my absence. [It might sound cold and restricting but that is how things were. It was woman's job to stand by her husband and support him while also provide him a heir. And as far as Richard was concerned, Anne had performed her duty well, especially when one took into consideration the unusual situation and unforgiving limits set by Richard himself.
Richard lifts his chin up a little when the fingers reached to slide along his jaw, providing a better access his features.]
Of course. If one is not able to stand out and prove themselves to be the shepherd among the sheep the plan will fail and burn. The false leader will be fed to wolves. [Despite the grim nature of their talk, Richard found himself enjoying from it. There was something almost reminiscent to it. How many times he and Buckingham had similar secret meetings, away from prying eyes as the plans for deceit and betrayal would pass from their lips to one another.]
There will always be those who'd seek for your destruction once you've obtained the power. It is simply in human nature. In those cases you must be the one holding reigns over the narrative, make your supporters see nothing but your story and reject those who'd try to rebel against it. That way you will have an army behind you as you crush the protesting voices.
[The silence wasn't unexpected, not when he was coming to know how much Richard was an internalized person. This must have been what was like for many who had attempted to get him to open up and speak on matters beyond business and the lifelong goals he had taken on. He didn't like to speak on personal matters. Yet, he didn't press when there was no answer; instead, he stepped in and pressed his lips against Richard's temple, holding the gesture a few seconds.
And then he simply moved on with the conversation. It was somewhat of a strange situation to find himself listening to what it was to have a wife; it sounded like an abstract Piltover. How bored would a woman be maintaining serving staff and providing education to children? For him where family was more of a choice than blood, this was a foreign concept.] So, you have a marriage, but she doesn't have power? Where I'm from that would earn the other being gutted in the streets. It's so... strange to hear that power dynamic exists. Are all women so restricted?
[Perhaps this was yet another reason for Richard to hide his differences. He had come to understand that a body type like that had earned the younger man the label of demon, and from a deeply religious society, that was problematic. It was no wonder he found Richard so attractive; that kind of adversity and secrecy built character (even if it was the wrong kind).] Agreed. Respect and fear are perhaps balances to power; people have to think you can elevate them with out or destroy them along the way if they do not perform as you expect of yourself and them.
[His hands slid down the front of Richard's body before he grasped one of the younger man's hands.] I have contingencies for those destructive tendencies. I have what the people need to succeed, to feel powerful when all their lives they have been made to feel weak and unwanted, to make other people afraid. [He tugged Richard's hand and took them around an aisle with large growing fruit trees until they came upon the wide and expansive strawberry patch.]
[Well, if it was in Silco's intentions to clear the muddled water in Richard's mind he certainly did not succeed. The kiss against his temple only manages to confuse him further. But he continues not to say anything, allowing the small gestures of affection play out as the other man's touch keeps wandering on his body.]
As a high-born lady she is spared from any physically taxing or otherwise hard work. Free to enjoy from the luxuries presented to her. ['Like a songbird in a cage,' Richard knows that's what it truly means to be a woman of high class in their world. If his parents had decided to cut off the proof of the manhood from his body and raised him as girl instead, he's sure his life would be just that. Quiet and calm. Tied to the man placed in front of him. Richard did not often spare much thought to Anne or her son, accepting their presence just as something that was there. Something that he required as man, simple as that. And yet... it would be a lie to say that he did not see the sad, oppressive cloud over Anne's mind whenever their eyes would meet. ] They might not have the same power as men do. But are not without their own wits or worth. More often than not, it is women that men go war for.
[Such case had been with his brother when he had decided to marry Elizabeth Woodville. A woman, who hid taste for politics, power and corruption behind her beautiful, serene smile. She might never posses the same might as The King does, but as a mother Queen, blessed by the God, she did hold her own power.]
So, you make yourself the necessarily evil. Binding people to you by force as they can't live without you. [It's not a bad tactic, although not necessarily one that Richard would utilize himself. After all, he had found out that aside from fear, love was strong motivator for people. They'd rather stand by a person whom they loved than feared.] Heh, there is someone I know who you would no doubt find interesting to meet.
[A meeting between Silco and Buckingham? Something that he can't picture to go too well, considering their egos, ambitions and temperaments. But it would definitely be interesting to bear a witness to.
Richard continues to walk when prompted, perfectly content to let Silco take the lead on this little leisure walk of theirs through the greenhouse. However, once the sight of very familiar plant enters to Richard's vision his eyes light up a little.] I did not know they would grow here as well.

So your woman is an accessory on your arm, meant to be brought out for special occasions to impress but otherwise, kept out of the way. [Silco had read enough history books to know that some societies were structured that way, and it was a fact that he hadn't been able to comprehend in comparison to his own society. Yes, he understood the act of possessiveness, of imagined property rights of another person, but this might be the first time he met someone who lived with such confining restrictions.] Men often go to war for whatever reason they think will allow them some measure of justification. What happens to women who don't allow themselves to be so confined to such restrictions?
[He had no doubt there was a way for a woman to maneuver in such a society, but he expected that consequences were as harsh in them as they had been in some of the books. He was again reminded of how close to perfect Zaun was, where men and women could explore their worth in whatever means they deemed necessary and the few loose rules were enforced with often brutal efficiency. If someone insulted you, you dealt with them or paid someone else to do it.
Silco hummed in acknowledgement.] Where I'm from, love can be paid for by the hour. I don't exactly carrying the bearing, appearance or attitude for someone who can be loved, so I lead with my strengths. [That's all he could do, and it had worked out for him very well in Zaun. It also wasn't doing that badly for him here in Aldrip either. There had to be a mix of give and take though; a tyrant would be displaced immediately, especially by this lot.] And who is this person that you speak of?
[He had seen that Richard had taken to the strawberry drink that he had offered on the Last Drop's opening. He had a hunch that the younger man enjoyed the red fruits.] Greenhouses allow for excellent growing conditions of most plants. You're free to pick a few if you would like to enjoy them.
[Hm. Well, that sure was a harsh and direct estimation of Richard's marital situation. A bit too direct, mind you, and he didn't really appreciate it. His brows knit together into a sharp displeased frown, shooting a glare up at the other's way almost as if it was a silent warning. But at the same time he doesn't try deny Silco's words. Because, ultimately? The man was right in his statement. Women were nothing but pretty status symbols for men, providing them comfort, love, support and eventually a heir.]
It depends on the severity of their transgressions, and what is their status in the society. But in most cases they would be attested, punished with public shaming, whipping or branding... And if witchcraft is believed to be involved then we torture and burn them alive.
['Just like the disgusting witch, Joan of Arc.' Richard feels his throat tighten at the thought. But still, strangely enough, she remained absent from his mind.
Richard looks at Silco's features and hums quietly. He is right. The man does not bear appearance of beloved hero who'll lead his people to the light. He is much more suited to play the part of a monster. It's interesting to see how openly Silco would embrace the truth rather than find comfort from the web of deceit, pretending to be something that he is not. Who knows, maybe there's a thing or two that Richard could learn from the man.]
A fellow Duke, like me. He's a man with great thirst for politics and someone who takes what he wants, unapologetically. [A small, barely noticeable smile creeps on Richard's lips as he speaks of his Kingmaker. There was not a day that didn't pass when his demon soul didn't yearn for it's missing piece, desperate to become a whole again. Being able to talk about the younger Duke like this did bring him some comfort.
He looks at the red berries peeking underneath the green leaves. Then, almost childlike impulse washes over him and he steps away from Silco to crouch over the strawberry patch to pick up a few berries]
[Silco noted the glare, but far more of a loud statement was the fact that Richard didn't deny his commentary. It was another reason for the younger man to be grateful for a father that had declared him male and allowed him to exist in that circle. After all, what kind of life would such a rigid society allow for someone who had to explain themselves to anyone. He suspected Richard would have been at great personal risk if not born to that particular father.
The punishment was an interesting choice as well. Public shaming was rather common in most societies, but branding? That was something he had not come across personally.] I see. What determines if witchcraft is involved or not? I assume they have to be forced to perform their acts of magic?
[He did not deny his physical limitations; he wasn't a hammer-wielding hero. He didn't take up combat readily, and he could be called a scheming conniving man. He didn't deny any of it; no, he owned it. He embraced the monster that he was, and perhaps all of Richard's claims would also come to pass in time similarly.
Silco noticed. The smile, the very subtle tonal shift, the look of brief longing. Richard had never spoken of anyone in such a manner before.] Someone you are close to, it seems. Perhaps you see a small amount of him in me then. [He also took what he wanted unapologetically.] Does he know of the secret you hide and accept you as I do?
[He remained where he was, watching Richard approach the strawberry patch. His gaze moved around the greenhouse to make certain that they still remained alone.]
[Richard truly owned his life to his father in more ways than just one. If it wasn't for that noble souls blood running through his veins, protecting him from any scrutiny and suspicion he would have no doubt been found out already and put to miserable death after experiencing slow and agonizing torture at the hands of the church.]
I am not expert so I do not know the exact manners that the church chooses to use to determine it. But.. I suppose that the crucial part is going against God's plan, refusing to reflect his image and deny the fate.
[Exactly what he had been doing since the moment of his birth. He had tried to hide it, of course. Tamper down his ambitions and live the life that was planned for him, fulfill the god given role by mundane, everyday actions. All until Buckingham had stepped into the picture and freed from his self-imposed shackles, showing him that there was nothing he could not.
The call for comparison between the two men has him paused. There was no denying that Richard could see the similarities, after all, it was Buckingham's words that Richard had heard slipping past Silco's clever lips - as if the kingmaker had tried to call for Richard's soul through another vessel. But now that he has actually gotten to know the man he could see the differences more clearly and appreciate them. Both men were monsters but different breed.]
He is a man who lowered himself to be a demon with me. [Richard admits. Was he truly so obvious with his affections towards the other? Or had Silco already learned to read him that well? Well, whichever was the case, Richard supposes there was no use denying the truth:] He is my equal.
After gathering a few berries on his palm, Richard goes ahead and tastes one. And surprisingly enough? It tastes just right. Maybe a tad bit sweeter than those he'd find in the wild but still. The realization brought him wave of relief and little bit nostalgia. Interestingly enough, Richard found himself homesick. Perhaps for the first time since his arrival.
Satisfied, he stands up and straightens his back. Turning back to Silco he extends his hand out to offer him strawberry.] You'll business will be in trouble if Whitey ever discovers these.
[Ah, so it was left up to a religious faction to determine one's guilt of a matter? History had told him that wasn't the best choice, but Richard seemed to defend some of those tactics. He suspected that the younger man's body would put him in league of witchcraft, though how that and magic were related he didn't know. Magic was feared, and even Silco had experienced how potent it could be in the form of Hextech.]
Your God sounds like a harsh individual to require everyone to fit into His image. Are you so certain that the message of this faction which represents your God has the best interests of the people?
[Silco couldn't help himself. As a non-religious person, it was easy for him to want to poke at such dedication to a non-entity. Janna was the closest Zaun had, and the tales were wild and varied about her presence in the city of glass and metal. Had he experienced her kind protectiveness? He doubted it, even when lost in the mines as a boy.
There was a shift in Richard's body language, which backed up the words that came as a description of this Duke. Equal station he assumed, but if one was described as politically ambitious unapologetically, he knew what that meant. A rise to the very top and likely Richard at the helm; why? Did Richard have a higher claim? He knew bloodlines were important to high-born people.]
Lowered himself, hmm? Or perhaps he was elevated with his association with you. [Honestly, they needed to work on that confidence.] So he's your lover. Perhaps he will make his way here and you two can have the life you were likely denied back in your home, as I am assuming you can't openly have two men sharing a bed where you're from.
[That seemed the end point in his mind. He and Richard may or may not continue their dalliance until the real prize arrived - assuming Buckingham did - and that would be that. It was good actually. He found his imagination from years of isolation cooled with this knowledge, and all of his expectations ground to an immediate halt. He knew it couldn't and wouldn't last, of course, but confirmation was as much a relief as it was a mild bitterness at the back of his throat. He did enjoy Richard's company after all.
He made an noise of acknowledgement in his throat. He hesitated in reaching out but eventually did to take the offered fruit in hand. He rolled it in his palm.] It's good the greenhouses are sealed and your companion doesn't know how to open doors then.
[It was a bold accusation. One that would earn his tongue cut out and subjugated to at least twenty lashes on his back, before put on trial for the blasphemy. Richard isn't used to hear someone speak so openly against the God and challenging his might. Well. At least aside from person, that is.]
God would only favor those most devout followers, allow them posses a wisdom that others don't know of and protect them from harm. Although, [he pauses, mind visiting the meeting with the Bishop.] They are humans as well and weak to temptation, if you know which strings to pull from.
[Heh, the comment does earn a small amused hum from him. Of course, Silco would see it that way. The man had no concern for his mortal soul and could thus not understand what it meant for a man to cast out his human skin in favor of demonic form.
But what follows actually manages to move Richard a bit, a heavy boulder lifting from his chest as a whole new realization dawned upon him. Buckingham... Here? Somehow Richard hadn't done as much as entertained the thought, merely accepting accepting the things as they were. But just like always, with hope came it's shadow: despair. Filling in Richard's body with the anxiety, swelling in his lungs and making him to tense up again.
A foolish dream. One that would never come to fruition..]
You may call us lovers but that does cover the true nature of our bond. We both seek for the same light, binding our bodies together was merely a proof of it. With that light gone there is no reason for him to come to me again. I'm certain he'll find another venues to satiate his hunger.
[It hurts. But Richard knows better than to cling on naive hope like that. He is no king here and Buckingham wouldn't be his kingmaker. There wouldn't be need for them to keep their covenant.
A brief smile visits Richard's lips when Silco takes the offered fruit. Richard too, decides to take one, removes the top part before passing it through his lips -- tongue quickly licking his fingers.] I wouldn't be too sure about that. I've come to learn that he always finds the way, if he so wills it.
[Silco wondered if Richard would eventually take issue with his prodding at this so called God, or if the younger man was constrained by the old fears of that kind of society. After all, Richard called himself a demon, and it seemed a term that had been thrown around for most of the younger man's life. That didn't sound like any manner of God he would bother to follow or listen to.]
I would say that a God is worthy of belief if they put in the effort instead of continually making demands on the mere mortals. That one sounds as arrogant as the others, looking for worship over circumstantial substance. [He shrugged his shoulders.] Everyone is weak to temptation. Why resist it? Temptation can be very enjoyable.
[He'd was here, so there was no much further for his soul to fall to. He wasn't about to change either, so this was who he was. He didn't care if anyone liked him or hated him; he was who he was so get in line or get out of the way while he did what he chose to excel at.
Yet, Silco was left with much to consider about this 'light' and the true nature of this bond with the other lover.] I don't understand the light reference, but if he'd so easily find another to replace you, he wasn't deserving of your attention in the first place. You could find better.
[He had a feeling that he wouldn't like this Buckingham all that much. Loyalty was too important to him, and he had a strange inkling that Richard may be a means to an end. That was partially Richard's fault, of course, but who could blame someone who had been shunned so much over the course of their life? It made the younger man ripe to be captured if the belief was a similar goal and acceptance.
He continued to roll the strawberry in his palm.] If he eats my strawberries, I'll give him a reason to squeal.
[Well, out of anyone from his world Richard might as well be the safest person to criticize god to. Aside from Buckingham, of course, who wholeheartedly spoke against the divine entity. Whether their god was good or bad, Richard didn't know and he didn't feel it to be in his place to question it either. It was just something that was -- a power that he would defy and obtain for himself.]
We mortals are foolish, flawed and blind compared to God. It is our duty to prove ourselves worthy of His love by repenting and resisting the temptations that devil will put in front of you. Unless we wish our souls to be lost in the eternal damnation once we leave the bodily world.
[Now, how did this world play into that divine play? Was it supposed to be part of his punishment for his transgressions? Or another temptation he ought to overcome? Well, if it was latter Richard definitely already failed the test. Not that he cared much for penance or begging forgiveness from source which would never grant it.
However, while he might not care about questioning the validity of God the critique towards his other half is not tolerated as much. Richard's eyes narrow and lips press together into a disapproving line. Well.. He supposes it is no wonder that Silco would not understand the true depths and nature of his relationship to the other duke.]
And you're saying that you wouldn't do the same for your own cause? Would you not also sacrifice everything there is to see your dreams to become reality. [Richard had already spilled so much blood for the sake of the crown. From both enemies and friends. There is nothing too sacred. Surely Silco would understand the necessity of it? And agree that there is no point in clinging on the dead weight.
A small chuckle escaped from his lips at the vague threat towards his companion.] Make sure to give him a good run, then. [He hums back, eating the last strawberry from his palm. Of course, Richard cherishes Whitey far too much to ever allow any real harm to come him. And he trusts Silco to realize that.]
Oh please, gods are just as foolish, flawed and blind. If they demand so much, it sounds like a toxic relationship to begin with. No wonder your devil has an easy way into people's hearts.
[It seemed a moot point to him, and this was exactly why he didn't believe in gods. Oh he had crossed paths with one, but it was fleeting and not worth mentioning. That one had a specific purpose, and he had served it with shock but no complaint. His only gripe about the encounter was he hadn't taken the damn sister with him. If it wouldn't send Jinx into a tailspin, he'd off her here just for the fun of it over and over.
However, it was interesting to mark the difference between arguing about God and making a comment about this other Duke. Richard's baring completely changed and that expression was as close to a warning as he was likely to receive on the matter. Undeterred, he shrugged his shoulder at the question. It sounded to him to be as toxic as the one with God honestly.
Yet, he felt he had to moderate his reply because at one time, his answer would have been a straight yes and he would sacrifice everything. Now... that water was muddied.] I thought I would. I was willing to sacrifice everything and everyone necessary for the change that my people needed. But there was one person I wouldn't sacrifice even when given the opportunity. [He looked at Richard.] So I simply planned on gaining independence and keeping her safe and by my side. Sometimes plans are better with someone else worthwhile in it.
[He thought Richard might understand in the end, perhaps if that person ever showed up. He doubted it was this Duke if so readily to be tossing Richard aside, and it would be Richard's own downfall to let that happen.]
Oh, I will. I see he sleeps in the bed with increasing frequency....
[There is a small, approving smile on Richard's lips. While Silco might not be aware of the severity of the anguish that is eternal torment of the hell's flames, he still appreciated the bold words. It was the defiance against the holy and good that had caught Richard's attention the first time they met. And it was no doubt the reason why he could also see beauty in Richard, making the man able to embrace him.
Richard listens carefully to Silco's words, allowing a brief and thoughtful silence fall between them. He knows immediately who that "someone" was to Silco. There was no one else it could be than his daughter. In theory, he could definitely understand the want to protect family. After all, an heir was essential for a king. Without a legacy he'd be nothing but a forgettable smudge on the pages of history. But at the same time.. Had he not already sacrificed the royal blood for the sake of the crown? If the situation was dire enough, would he be able to protect the boy he had claimed as his own? Or would he also throw him to the altar like he had done with George...]
Do you not believe in solitude then? [Quite interesting contrast, considering how he had talked about love before.
Richard takes a step closer to Silco, reaching out to place his hand on top of the wrist that is holding the strawberry. ]
Yes. Of course he is. [He says, voice light as if he was stating the obvious. Of course Whitey was welcomed to his bed. Then, he cranes his neck down and brings Silco's palm closer so that he can pick up the fruit with his teeth.]
[Silco knew anguish, and he cared little to avoid temptation for those around him. They had a right to indulge in their own desires at will, especially with life being as cruel and painful as it normally was. His own indulgences were subtler, but he was no more or less able to escape them as anyone else.
He looked at Richard, the corner of his lip twitching at the question. He had believed in solitude for a long time - since Vander - and he had been content to focus on his life goal forever. He had the focus and the cruelty to see it done, building his little drug empire deep below and then striking when Vander was weakest to wrestle control. He had done all that on his own, in relative solitude. The Jinx came into his life, and she had weaseled her way in beyond his defenses. He had been... okay with that, even as things went off the rails and both of them lost control of the situation. Even with one hand on the wheel, he could steer when she was off on the limb. Then he found a piece in his world he wouldn't be willing to give up and the dream of independence momentarily put on pause.]
One can be in solitude and still be surrounded by people. [He met Richard's step with one of his own, as if using physical closeness as part of his point.] Don't you it would be better to rule over all your aspirations with someone else who shares your grit and determination? Someone who knows all your dark secrets and embraces you still, pushes you up to the necessary highs only for you to turn and pull them up with you to bask in that success? [He leaned his face closer to Richard's.] Someone to watch your back and you theirs? Someone you'd burn the world down for?
[He rolled his eyes and turned his face aside, not minding the pig in the bed. Whitey was important to Richard.] I accidentally spooned him the other night searching for you in the bed. [Normally he didn't have to search far for Richard who latched on like a barnacle. His thoughts ground to a halt at Richard's antics, and he turned the strawberry over in his fingers to allow easier access to the fruit.] I think you like being a tease....

Date: 2024-07-31 03:19 am (UTC)[He had thought that curiosity that they had started with would leave after falling into bed together.

Date: 2024-07-31 01:54 pm (UTC)His finger tips slid along Silco's jawline, feeling the hotness of the skin.
Let us continue the walk.

Date: 2024-07-31 05:22 pm (UTC)His blue eye half closed at the tease of lips, and his arms tightened momentarily.

Date: 2024-08-02 01:03 am (UTC)[With his eyes narrowing and lips curling a hint of a smugness, the look Richard gives Silco as the words slip past his tongue is almost sultry.

Date: 2024-08-02 01:18 pm (UTC)[He decided to clarify that, in case Richard had decided that any bladed weapon would due for this apparent foyer into a dangerous sexual addition.

Date: 2024-08-03 12:25 am (UTC)[Richard counters, teasing right back.

Date: 2024-08-03 03:01 am (UTC)[Despite his tone remaining normal, he was teasing in his own subtle way.

Date: 2024-08-03 05:33 pm (UTC)The confirmation earns a small smile from Richard.]

Date: 2024-08-04 12:33 am (UTC)Indeed.

Date: 2024-08-05 05:14 pm (UTC)In time, yes.

Date: 2024-08-05 09:11 pm (UTC)[He had been working when he was a child, though nothing particularly difficult.

Date: 2024-08-06 12:53 am (UTC)She's my wife.

Date: 2024-08-06 01:13 am (UTC)And then he simply moved on with the conversation.
[He tugged Richard's hand and took them around an aisle with large growing fruit trees until they came upon the wide and expansive strawberry patch.]
cw: reference to body mutilation...
Date: 2024-08-06 02:01 pm (UTC)As a high-born lady she is spared from any physically taxing or otherwise hard work.

Date: 2024-08-07 01:15 pm (UTC)[He had no doubt there was a way for a woman to maneuver in such a society, but he expected that consequences were as harsh in them as they had been in some of the books.

Date: 2024-08-08 02:34 am (UTC)The punishment was an interesting choice as well.

Date: 2024-08-08 07:35 am (UTC)I am not expert so I do not know the exact manners that the church chooses to use to determine it.

Date: 2024-08-08 01:15 pm (UTC)Your God sounds like a harsh individual to require everyone to fit into His image.

Date: 2024-08-08 05:47 pm (UTC)God would only favor those most devout followers, allow them posses a wisdom that others don't know of and protect them from harm.

Date: 2024-08-09 02:15 am (UTC)I would say that a God is worthy of belief if they put in the effort instead of continually making demands on the mere mortals.

Date: 2024-08-16 12:51 pm (UTC)We mortals are foolish, flawed and blind compared to God.

Date: 2024-08-16 01:25 pm (UTC)[It seemed a moot point to him, and this was exactly why he didn't believe in gods.

Date: 2024-08-16 03:57 pm (UTC)Richard listens carefully to Silco's words, allowing a brief and thoughtful silence fall between them.

Date: 2024-08-16 04:14 pm (UTC)He looked at Richard, the corner of his lip twitching at the question.
